White Goods Appliances

How do I properly recycle/dispose of large appliances?

Large appliances are often referred to as “white goods” and are generally collected and/or stored by the county or municipality for recycling or disposal. Contact the solid waste department in the county or municipality to find out what recycling/disposal services they provide for refrigerators, freezers, washer/dryers, air conditioners. Some communities collect appliances at the curb after making special arrangements with the homeowner, while some require residents to bring them to specific site(s) in the community. Some appliances can be taken to a scrap metal recycler in the community where they will be recycled. Some scrap metal recyclers require that the Freon be properly removed by an air-conditioning professional prior to accepting them for recycling. Call the scrap metal recycler in the area for more information on their requirements.
