Dental Office Category Rule

All new and existing dental offices must meet the requirements of the EPA’s Dental Effluent Guidelines (found in 40 CFR Part 441). Information about the new requirements can be found here. This rule specifies that dental offices that place or remove dental amalgam must operate and maintain an approved amalgam separator, maintain maintenance records, and implement best management practices to prevent discharge of waste amalgam.

Dental offices that will not place or remove dental amalgam except in limited circumstances, or where the practice of dentistry consist only of the following dental specialties: oral pathology, oral and maxillofacial radiology, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, periodontics, or prosthodontics is not subject to any part of this rule.  Mobile units and dental offices that do not discharge wastewater to a municipal sanitary sewer are also not subject to this rule.

Dental offices subject to this rule are required to complete and return this form:  “One-Time Compliance Report for Dental Dischargers.”
