MDEQ Lifts Advisory for Sand Creek in Oktibbeha County
(JACKSON, Miss.) – The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) lifted a water contact advisory Wednesday that had been issued January 21 for a segment of Sand Creek in the Starkville area.
The advisory extended from the headwaters of the unnamed tributary that flows from south of Highway 182 to the North Farm on to the confluence with Sand Creek northwest of Starkville Ford-Lincoln, then southeast past Highland Plantation until the confluence with the northern tributary of Sand Creek south of East Starkville Church/Greenland Road.
MDEQ advises that people can now engage in water contact such as swimming or wading and can consume fish or anything else taken from these waters. The advisory was issued due to a line blockage near the North Farm wastewater pumping station at Mississippi State University that resulted in a release of 15,000 gallons of wastewater into the creek that was repaired by the City of Starkville.
As a reminder, the advisory for Josey Creek in Starkville issued July 21 has also been lifted. That advisory extended from the Highway 182 West crossing north to the confluence with Trim Cane Creek.
