MDEQ Issues Water Contact Advisory for Yazoo River in Belzoni

(JACKSON, Miss.) – The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) issued a water contact advisory Monday for a section of the Yazoo River near Belzoni. The advisory includes the section of the river beginning near the intersection of Leflore Avenue and Castleman Street and continues to the Highway 12 bridge (see attached map).

MDEQ recommends that people avoid water contact such as swimming, wading, and fishing. People should also avoid eating fish or anything else taken from these waters until further notice.

The advisory is being issued due to a faulty lift station that discharged sewage into the Yazoo River. The city is working on repairs to the lift station to resolve the issue. MDEQ has been in contact with the city and will begin collecting water samples once repairs have been completed.  The advisory may be revised as needed.
