MDEQ Issues Water Contact Advisory for Turtle Creek in Flowood

(JACKSON, Miss.) –The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) issued a temporary water contact advisory Friday for a section of Turtle Creek in Flowood. The advisory extends on Turtle Creek from Pinebrook Circle, where it crosses Turtle Creek between East Pinebrook and West Pinebrook, to Spillway Road.

MDEQ recommends that people avoid water contact recreation such as swimming, wading, or fishing in these waters. People should also avoid eating fish or anything else taken from these waters until further notice.

The advisory is issued due to a damaged manhole that allowed sewage to escape the system and enter the creek. The City of Flowood is repairing the manhole and is staging pumps to prevent any material from entering the Ross Barnett Reservoir. MDEQ staff has begun to monitor bacteria levels and water quality and will revise the advisory as needed.
