JACKSON, MS – The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) has issued a water contact advisory today for Snake Creek to the point where it merges with Baker’s Creek in Hinds County. The advisory is being issued due to an overflow of minimally treated wastewater from a breached levee at the Raymond publicly owned treatment works facility (see attached map).

MDEQ recommends that people avoid water contact such as swimming, wading, and fishing.  People should also avoid eating fish or anything else taken from these waters until further notice.

MDEQ staff will begin collecting water samples and continue to monitor the water quality in the area once the levee has been repaired. The advisory may be revised as needed.
