(JACKSON, Miss.) – The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) issued a water contact advisory Friday for Moorhead Bayou and associated floodwaters near the City of Moorhead.  The advisory is issued for the Moorhead Bayou and associated floodwaters from the eastern boundary of the city to its confluence with the Quiver River (see attached map).  The advisory is being issued due to mechanical failure of pumps at the city’s main lift station that has resulted in the discharge of untreated wastewater into the bayou. The city is working to repair the pumps.

MDEQ recommends that people avoid water contact such as swimming, wading, and fishing.  People should also avoid eating fish or anything else taken from these waters until further notice.

MDEQ is working with the city to help resolve these issues and monitoring the impact on the river.  This advisory may need revision as needed.
