MDEQ Issues Water Contact Advisory for Josey Creek and Trim Cane Creek in Oktibbeha County

(JACKSON, Miss.) – The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) issued a water contact advisory today for sections of Josey Creek and Trim Cane Creek in Oktibbeha County.  The advisory for Josey Creek begins from where it crosses Highway 82 to where it joins Trim Cane Creek and for Trim Cane Creek to its confluence with Sun Creek (see attached map).

MDEQ recommends that people avoid water contact such as swimming, wading, and fishing. People should also avoid eating fish or anything else taken from these waters until further notice.

The advisory is being issued due to a faulty lift station that discharged sewage into Josey Creek.  MDEQ staff has been in contact with the City of Starkville and will collect water samples to monitor the water quality in the area. The advisory may be revised as needed.
