MDEQ Issues Water Contact Advisory for Hopson Bayou in Tutwiler

(JACKSON, Miss.) – The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) issued a water contact advisory Tuesday for Hopson Bayou in the Town of Tutwiler in Tallahatchie County. The advisory extends on the bayou between the Second Street bridge and the Thornton Road bridge. (see attached map)

The advisory is being issued due to an ongoing sewer release into Hopson Bayou from a broken force main. There is currently no estimate of the amount of discharge.

MDEQ recommends that people avoid water contact such as swimming, wading, and fishing in this area under an advisory. People should also avoid eating fish or anything else taken from these waters until further notice.

MDEQ staff will begin monitoring the water quality in the area, and the advisory may be revised after that work is completed.
