May 30, 2025(JACKSON, MS) – The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality has been notified by JXN Water of a significant sewer line break of the West Bank Interceptor in Hanging Moss Creek near its confluence with the Pearl River.

While this location falls within an area already under a long-standing water contact advisory, MDEQ is reemphasizing this advisory due to the known volume of untreated sewage discharge entering the Pearl River from this recent break. MDEQ recommends people avoid contact with water in the affected area, including wading, swimming and fishing.

“This most recent break further underscores the importance of the standing advisory and the need for the public to be aware of the potential risks associated with water contact in this area,” said MDEQ Executive Director Chris Wells.

MDEQ will continue to coordinate with JXN Water and monitor the situation.
