The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality has lifted the water contact advisory issued on May 11, 2026, for Comynie Bayou and a portion of the Pascagoula River in Jackson County.

The advisory was originally issued following a wastewater collection system bypass near John Avenue in Pascagoula that resulted in the release of approximately 550,000 gallons of wastewater into the waterways. The City of Pascagoula has completed all necessary repairs to the wastewater collection system. Subsequent water quality testing conducted by MDEQ indicates that bacteria levels have returned to normal and acceptable levels for recreational water contact.

As a result, the advisory covering all of Comynie Bayou and the section of the Pascagoula River from the west end of Delmas Avenue south to the mouth of the river has been lifted effective immediately.
