Cherokee Concerned Citizens

The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) continues to address community concerns about potential exposures to pollutants from air emission facilities in the Bayou Casotte Industrial park. The agency has been instrumental in creating collaborative efforts designed to bring varied groups, individuals and agencies together to work on problems that can potentially impact human health and the environment in the Pascagoula area. To date, MDEQ has promoted community engagement activities among the community and industries to discuss citizens’ concerns, industry activities, and evacuation plans. An air permitting workshop was designed and presented in July 2014 to educate citizens on the permitting process. The agency worked with the community on developing an Ambient Air Sampling Project Work Plan to determine if the area has emission levels that could pose an elevated risk to human health or the environment. In 2016, the MDEQ initiated the plan.

MDEQ’s goal in every community is to judiciously and appropriately respond to concerns regarding human health and the environment.
